Our Story
BMAC STEM was founded in 2023 by Kenji Darby as a response to a simple but important question: How do we create a lifelong pathway that guides students from curiosity to careers, leadership, and community impact?
Rather than creating another after-school STEM program, BMAC STEM became the founding implementation site for The STEM Continuum™ — a systems-based educational framework that integrates mentorship, technical learning, leadership development, workforce readiness, and lifelong learning.
Today, BMAC STEM serves as the pilot environment where The STEM Continuum™ is refined through real-world programs, workshops, mentoring, and community partnerships.
The Problem We're Solving
Black and underrepresented students in Prince George's County and across the country face a fragmented STEM landscape — isolated programs, no clear progression, and limited access to mentors who look like them. The result is a talent pipeline that leaks at every stage.

The Philosophy Behind the Framework
The STEM Continuum™ is built on three foundational beliefs:
Systems outlast programs.
A single workshop changes a day. A system changes a life. The STEM Continuum™ is designed to be a permanent infrastructure — not a one-time event.
Mentorship is the multiplier.
Technical skills can be taught. But the confidence to pursue a career, navigate obstacles, and lead — that comes from seeing someone who looks like you succeed. Mentorship is built into every stage of the framework.
Outcomes must be measured.
We don't just count participation. We track progression — from enrollment to certification, from mentorship to career placement. What gets measured gets improved.
The Continuum: A Visual Overview
Five integrated stages — each building on the last.
Spark curiosity through hands-on STEM exploration. Students discover what science, technology, engineering, and math feel like — before they know what to call it.
Deepen interest through structured programs, coding clubs, and science projects. Students begin identifying their strengths and interests within STEM.
Build real skills through cybersecurity tracks, college prep, and one-on-one mentorship. Students develop technical competencies and a clear career vision.
Transition into the workforce with professional fellowships, industry sponsorships, and alumni networks. Students launch careers with community behind them.
Give back as mentors, advisors, and community leaders. Alumni become the next generation of role models — closing the loop and strengthening the continuum.
